THE STORY

The realistic artwork depicts the historical event in Sikh history "Bandi Chhor".

Guru Hargobind Sahib, the sixth Sikh Guru, was unjustly imprisoned in Gwalior Fort by Emperor Jahangir due to political reasons. According to Sikh tradition, Emperor Jahangir was impressed by Guru Hargobind Sahib and agreed to release him from prison. However, the Guru insisted that the release of other innocent prisoners was equally important. He requested that 52 Hindu kings who were also imprisoned alongside him be freed.

The "Bandi Chhor Divas" (or Bandi Chhor Diwas) is a significant Sikh festival celebrated on the same day as Diwali, marking the historical event of Guru Hargobind Sahib's release from Gwalior Fort along with 52 Hindu kings (rajahs) in 1619. The term "Bandi Chhor" translates to "liberator of prisoners" or "release from captivity," reflecting the Guru's role in freeing the imprisoned kings and himself.
